Why use Polyurethane/PU Coatings?
The debate of using Acid Catalysed Curing products versus Polyurethane remains a subject of much speculation but the answer can be seen with a significant move in the UK towards polyurethane and polyester product ranges in recent years.
Typically, the two systems are as durable as each other and can look and feel similar upon final appearance but there is a big difference in the application and intended use of the substrate being sprayed.
The formaldehyde associated with Acid Cat products is still evident up to 28 days after spraying, leaving a significant health hazard until that time. Whilst polyurethane products contain isocyanates, most of these are extracted by the spray booth immediately after spraying. In parts of Europe, no furniture containing products containing formaldehyde (ie Acid Cat ) are allowed to enter a household until at least 28 days after spraying. There is no such restriction with products containing isocyanates (ie polyurethane).
Polyurethane products are also more moisture resistant and can be used on vertical surfaces in kitchens and bathrooms and other areas of humidity.
High gloss finishes are also easier to achieve with polyurethane and by using polyester primers and sealers, a mirror-like finish can easily be achieved to the envy of the Acid Cat user.
